Outreach with The Zombie Hunters

The Zombie Rights Campaign has decided to embark upon an ambitious effort to bring knowledge of a more enlightened and peaceful co-existence with our Differently Animated brethren to sites that are currently, shall we say, less than completely positive in their relationship with the Undead community. We’re hoping to open up a positive dialogue, perhaps change a few minds, have a laugh or two, and foster meaningful change in Living-Zombie relations.

First up, we have placed an ad on popular post-apocalyptic webcomic The Zombie Hunters. This is not a comic for the faint of heart amongst our ZRC readership. To be frank, it is full of images of anti-Zombie violence, mayhem, and a severely anti-Zombie perspective that is antithetical to our purposes here at the ZRC.

Still, in a “Nixon-Goes-to-China” spirit, we have placed an advertisement there, and hope to welcome Zombie Hunters readers to the ZRC with open arms. Pull up a virtual chair, post a comment, air a grievance if you like. As always, the ZRC’s doors are open, and we’re ready to strike up a conversation.

My my. I never thought I would see the day. Zombie rights? What astonishing times we live in! I, for one, fully embrace this truly noble cause. Allow me to introduce myself.

Hello, my name is Cheryl and I feel true compassion towards our Zombie brethren. Zombies have been a major focal point in my life and I thought I was alone in my remorse for the poor Zombie in the games and movies that were shot, crushed, or burned to char. Those poor victims! They were merely minding their own business before some gun toting madman goes and murders them.

Why, let’s look deeper into that. In most games those poor Zombies are often found trapped in some abandoned building or tunnel, imprisoned for lord knows how long. Is it really so hard to imagine them attacking be it from fear, desperation to escape, or starvation? The need to survive can turn even the most rational of men into an animal. Perhaps those poor Zombie heard the gunfire from the “hero” and knew it was not freedom that was coming for them. They had a right to fight back. Self defense doth not a “monster” make.

I read through your blog. I’m surprised that while you covered “Left 4 Dead” you did not cover the Half-life series. Why Half-Life 2 is dreadful in their coverage of Zombies. They had an entire town populated with Zombies who had to live in constant fear of a madman who built elaborate and cruel deathtraps. A madman who would shoot at them from above and even imprisoned one poor victim in a cage connected to a gas line and ignition trigger! Those poor, poor people. They even screamed for help, though onto deaf ears; the developers had the cries reversed to sound like gibberish. Just look up “Ravenholm” for this horrific example of cruelty.

Good job linking from Zombie Hunters. I would never have thought to look. It’s a fine comic, despite the anti-zombie theme, note that almost all the main characters are in fact Zombies, they just had not “turned” yet.

Anyways I am probably boring you and so will end this introduction. It is a pleasure to meet you and learn about the cause! I’ll check in often for updates and to comment again! :)

We here at the ZRC are happy to hear from you, and are also happy to have such productive input on the pressing issue of Zombie Rights.

Zombies are indeed the unappreciated victims in many a horror film, videogame or novel. At worst, Zombies are guilty of hunger and poor table manners; why is it that when a soccer team in the Andes eats human flesh out of desperation, it’s heroic, but a Zombie eats someone and it’s unforgiveable?

    Prejudice, I say.

As for Half Life 2, the ZRC is aware of the game, but to be honest we’re focusing more on new materials as they come out. The past is full of many horrible examples of anti-Zombie violence and we put an emphasis on Left 4 Dead 2 due to its heavy advertising blitz and contemporary impact. Plus, there was a free demo on Xbox Live, and that always helps out the old budget.

We may have to grab it in the Orange Box version now that interest has been expressed on the blog, however.

We’re also glad to see the ad on The Zombie Hunters working out. Normally we place ads on pro-Zombie sites and comics, like Overcompensating or Skin Horse, or neutral forums, but this time we decided to reach out to the other side of the issue. We at the ZRC feel that the status of the titular hunters is even more tragic for the fact that they are latent Zombies; forced by an unjust society to turn upon their own kind, or half of their own kind, just to survive.

    Horrific.

Anyway, thanks again for your input, and welcome to the Zombie Rights Campaign blog!
