Deadpool – Merc with a Mouth Issues 1-2

In our continuing quest for a positive depiction of the undead in our media, the ZRC consumes a great deal of various entertainment products.  We see movies, watch television, read novels and, yes, comics.  As many of our readers are no doubt aware, there has been an enormous surge in popularity for comic books dealing with the undead in the last few years.  Equal to their popularity, however, has been the level of viciously anti-Zombie prejudice found in these books.   We at the ZRC have longed for a pro-zombie comic for some time, but have searched in vain.

Until, perhaps, now.

Deadpool: Merc with a Mouth is set sometime after the events of Marvel Zombies 4.  Zombie Deadpool, or at least, his head, has turned up in the Savage Land, and Deadpool is sent to retrieve him so that AIM, a super-villain organization of mad scientists, can study and weaponize the virus that makes him undead.  There is a lot of violence, gorgeous brightly colored cartoony art, rapid-fire jokes and superhero intrigue along the way.

What makes this comic so interesting from the ZRC’s perspective is that, to date, Zombie Deadpool has been written as a very sympathetic character.  Sure, he’s a loony, self-involved schemer, but all Deadpools seem to be that way.  Once you get to know him, he’s a perfectly chummy fellow, and he and his living counterpart get along swimmingly.  There’s even a heartwarming scene in the second issue where Deadpool and Z-Pool have a sing-a-long around a warm campfire in the jungle.  Living and dead, together in harmony at last, in a Marvel comic no less.

The ZRC is overjoyed to perhaps have finally found an ongoing comic series it might be able to recommend, though we are holding out on a decision until we read a few more issues.  Will Z-Pool save the day, will Deadpool continue to get along with his undead companion, and could a zombie find a safe haven even in the rabidly anti-undead Marvel universe?  I guess we’ll have to keep reading to find out.
