ZRC Review – Fear the Walking Dead Season 2, Episode 3
And the saga of Jerks on a Boat continues into Week Three! This time our heroes have the chance to rescue several Living people, so Anti-Zombie prejudice alone can’t lead to the inevitable catastrophe. Could a happy ending result?
When last we left our adventurers, they had just destroyed a Living family that made the mistake of letting them stay the night, as well as unjustly excluded the local Undead population from their public property.
This week, a bit of a flashback, to a bit of a promotional campaign.
See, as part of a strategy to spread tragic distrust of the Undead across the internet, AMC created a short online video series where the ‘outbreak’ takes hold on a commercial flight. (Available collected here, now).
It was promised that at least one survivor from that promo campaign would get an appearance in Fear the Walking Dead, and so here we are.
Obviously, discussing this episode will involve spoilers for BOTH show and mini-show, so keep that in mind.
We start with some haggard, in some cases burned or injured, plane survivors in a life raft. And they immediately set upon each other, in classic Kirkman fashion.
Since it is a very small apocalypse, we naturally run into one of these survivors again, as a Zombie, subjected to tragic indignities and ending up as a plot contrivance to stall the main (Living) cast.
While their boat is stalled by Zombie, the group takes to looting the wreckage of a coincidentally nearby plane crash.
Also they hurt a lot of innocent Zombies instead of rendering meaningful assistance of any kind. Like this poor trapped Zombie.
Then they go on a full-fledged rampage, which was frankly both shocking and gratuitious. Really. Who beats up on people who just got over a plane crash?
But after escaping their looting of a tragic transportation accident, our cast briefly entertains rescuing the two remaining, bedragged plane crash Living survivors they had stumbled across while rampaging.
Very briefly entertains, mind you.
Ah well.
On to next week!
