ZRC Reviews: ‘The Confessional’

Youtube is rapidly becoming a revolutionary platform for distributing independent movies; we recently reviewed (and loved) Rigamortis: A Zombie Love Story here on the ZRC blog, and it’s up for free viewing on Youtube for a limited time, for example. That is a finely acted and directed, Zombie Friendly musical experience.

Then, however, there are the Anti-Zombie films proliferating on Youtube like a plague of locusts in a grain belt. Case in point, the bizarre CG/live action hybrid experience, ‘The Confessional’.

‘The Confessional’ reminds me of… well, a very strange, non-Zombie film from The Dark Carnival last year called ‘Liquid Memories’, which was a very trippy CGified film about altering one’s own memories. Indie film that uses CG in this manner to suggest madness and the dissolution of society doesn’t come along every day, so I guess they are vaguely similar visually, if not in theme.

Of course, only one involves Anti-Zombie prejudice, and that’s ‘The Confessional’, our topic for today.

Circuitous aren’t I? I blame all the lightning, it’s fried my brain today. At any rate, ‘The Confessional’ describes itself thusly on its Youtube page:

After a long hard fought battle against the undead, one of the last men on Earth seeks solace in a nearby church by confessing his sins to a priest, who has also survived the zombie invasion.

Just starting off we clearly have issues with this movie. I mean, ‘zombie invasion’? That’s more than putting a thumb on the scale, it’s like an entire fist. How about ‘Global Reanimation Block Party’ instead, hmm?

Needless to say, this man is supposed to be our short film’s protagonist, and the audience is, I guess, supposed to be rooting for him to find the solace he seeks in the lonely church, perhaps even be granted absolution. Things don’t always go the way you’d plan though… I won’t spoil the ending, except to say: you’re going to see it coming. I mean, seriously. This film is about four minutes long and if you’re like me you’ll spend almost half yelling at the screen for it to go ahead and get the ‘twist’ over with, thanks much.

It’s a very Anti-Zombie twist too. The ZRC hence rates ‘The Confessional’ a solid ‘Living Supremacist’ for being yet another entry in the ‘Zombies are going to destroy everything I love, boo hoo’ line of films pandering to fearful Living narcissists.

Awful fearmongering.

You can see the whole film below, not that I recommend it:

Hat tip to KillingBoxx for pointing this one out to the ZRC.
