The ZRC had not planned to discuss the Daredevil tv series. There are lots of Zombies in the greater Marvel Universe, but Daredevil is about a living man with superhuman senses. The second season, we had observed from advertising, concerned his conflict with The Punisher, another Living human being.

That’s not the sort of media the ZRC routinely screens for the blog.

So imagine our surprise when we learned that the show, mid-season, introduces ZOMBIE NINJAS to the equation.

Really.

Shadow warriors scaling the walls type ninjas.

But, you know, Zombies. Many of them at least.

And in an interesting move, their leader is *also* a Zombie. An intelligent Zombie, albeit apparently serving a supposedly evil cult.

I say supposedly because, although many of The Hand’s actions are objectively objectionable, a lot of what we know about them comes from three very unreliable sources: two assassins and our torturer/corrupt lawyer protagonist himself.

So, grain of salt.

From a Zombie Rights perspective this is a decidedly mixed bag. The Hand in the main marvel universe are a group of demon-worshipping necromancy practicing assassin cultists, and they don’t stray far from that in the show (though they also seem to have branched out into organized crime and even respectable real estate endeavors).

But they’re a well integrated Zombie and Living workforce, and clearly, there is room for advancement for the Differently Animated in their ranks.

Plus, as mentioned, our alleged heroes are no role models either.

Hmm.

It’s a tricky situation. As we have discussed many times before on the ZRC blog, necromancy is a difficult subject. It’s obviously not inherently *wrong* to raise the dead, as a time honored practice and origin story of many a Zombie. But it needs to be done with care and compassion.

Zombie Employment is also a delicate topic (discussed in one of our signature ZRC pamphlets even). On the whole, of course, greater Zombie employment is a good thing, but we must always be on guard against Zombie exploitation.

The ZRC will have to monitor this situation more carefully in future Netflix shows. It wouldn’t be surprising for ninjas to show up in Iron First, for example.

We just hope the Zombie Ninjas get a fair shake.
