‘As Night Falls’ Trailer Depicts the Tragic Cycle of Living-Undead Violence

Posted By on February 18, 2011

Recently, ZRC Facebook pal and conversationalist Deneen Melody linked to the official trailer for one of her upcoming projects, ‘As Night Falls’. She also warned us that the ZRC would probably not be pleased with the result, for it features violence against the Differently Animated.

On the other hand she has also assured us that these are not, in fact, ‘friendly Zombies’. Which was intended to be reassuring, and the intent alone, and the willingness to concede the existence of friendly Zombies, does count for something.

Having viewed the trailer, what it feels most like to this viewer is the sort of propaganda/infotainment product one sometimes sees in modern, long-running conflicts fueled by racial or national or ethnic tensions. The trailer assures the audience that, this time, the ‘victims’ will ‘fight back’, while showing only Living people responding with violence toward the Undead. The story, as the trailer relates anyway, seems to concern the classic underlying cause of many of these ethno-cultural disputes: land. Land that both parties feel is theirs to inherit.

This pervasive sense of unilateral victimization, where one side of a conflict sees itself as the sole and only wronged group, fervently believing the other side in fact is responsible for all grievances, is also strikingly familiar from long-running struggles around the world today.

Thus when the trailer’s music picks up the tempo and it boldly proclaims this resistance by ‘victims’ fighting back, we are, as the audience, naturally intended to be motivated, pumped up even, to root for their faction, and to demonize and ignore the other side.

Is this intentional propaganda, or the organic result of decades of pervasive cultural brainwashing and recrimination? Does the line between the two become impossibly fuzzy so many years into a conflict?

Sadly the ZRC believes it likely to be the latter. The world of Living-Zombie relations is so strained in this country, and the Living community has become so tribal in its affiliations, that it almost irresistibly colors any story told about the Zombies of America. Entire generations have been brought up to believe themselves blameless for the conflict, and so naturally hold themselves to be innocent victims, rather than active participants, in the struggle. As a Living individual myself, I have seen and experienced this first hand, in our schools and communities.

Ultimately the question to be asked is not ‘Who is to blame?’ for this unfortunate state of affairs, but ‘Who will be the first, on both sides, to take the first steps toward ending it?’

That’s why we’re here, at the ZRC, and why we believe so strenuously in dialogue. The fact is that there have been unfortunate incidents on both sides, and involving both sides, of the Living-Zombie relationship. Mistakes have been made; occasionally, yes, brains have been eaten. But in order to reach a brighter future we need to put these painful mistakes behind us and move toward forgiveness, to break the cycle of violence and recrimination.

Or else the tragedy seen in the trailer for ‘As Night Falls’ will continue into the next generation.

ZRC Protest Blog #3: Inside the Capitol

Here’s a batch of pictures from the trip to the big rally downtown today; as usual, you can see the whole set here.

ZRC Protest Blog

Posted By on February 17, 2011

Greetings to all Zombie Rights Supporters from downtown Madison; specifically, I’m checking in from the downtown public library, which has very acceptable wifi.

Getting downtown for the protests was easy enough, but parking, that’s another matter. From what I’ve seen the garages are utterly packed, and there are thousands upon thousands of people walking in from all over downtown.

Everybody and their brother is here today. Lots of unions, tons of kids and parents here thanks to the school closures, various lefty groups (the Socialists had a table, naturally). Tons of signs, creative attention raising stunts, you name it, and I have lots of pictures and some video. At times it feels like there are four or five large protests going on at once; multiple rally sites, a recall effort directed at the Republicans who favor the bill, several different marching groups going around the square. Things are peaceful, but a little tense. I think the crowd expects the bill to pass despite, or perhaps *to* spite, all the protesters.

I’m posting the first few pictures below; in order not to be That Guy I’m keeping most back until I’m on the home network, to be polite to the other public wifi users.

IMG_1434
(Walking up on State Street)

IMG_1446
(There’s already a recall movement, trying to pull *all* of the Republican State Senators in favor of the bill)

IMG_1450
(Another shot of the recall table. Of course, living in Madison, my Senator’s not on the recall list, because they’re not evil. At least, not *that* evil)

IMG_1449
(The Firefighters arrive, complete with bagpipes. People went nuts.)

Update #1
Some more photos above and below. Gotta get moving again, find a place to plug-in, maybe get a hot drink before hitting the rally some more.

IMG_1451
(More of the firefighters’ march, also, note this sign I didn’t see until I got the picture off the camera. Normally we keep it clean here on the ZRC blog but exceptions can be made.)

IMG_1454
(The Firefighters are out in serious force in solidarity with the unions under attack)

(video of the firefighters arriving. Listen to that crowd.)
IMG_1456
(On to the Capitol!)

Update #2:
I’ve been in and out of the Capitol since I left the library, and.. wow. I’ve never seen anything like this. Almost all public spaces are packed with people; the rotunda area is completely occupied and there’s a sit-in going. Lots of amazing pictures to upload.

A few people commented on my sign, but not a ton. It’s so hard to stand out in a crowd like this. One person said they loved Zombies though.

On the other hand I did run into a group of *Anti*-Zombie protesters, who were there basically calling for the Nat. Guard to be reserved for a future Zombie Apocalypse.

Finally, rumors are flying but supposedly the Democratic, and possibly two Republican, state senators have fled the area to avoid a quorum so Walker’s Anti-Union bill can’t proceed. Maybe even left the state.

I’m heading back to the ZRC compound to get a pamphlet designed; the protests continue on through the night and into tomorrow. I may come back down without my fancy toys, see about that sit-in, but first I want to design a ZRC pamphlet specific to this event. Plus I have a deadline for some guest posts for someone that I need to meet. Responsibility and all that.

Update #3
Back at the ZRC compound. Uploaded the first big batch of photos to Flickr; you can see the set here.

Some highlights:

IMG_1453
(There were a ton of firefighters there today in solidarity with the state workers who are at risk with this bill)

IMG_1459
(Also present were a number of bands and musicians. I’m not sure the accordion’s going to win people over though :D)

IMG_1467
(There were a ton of kids and families there today; closing all the schools was a good move judging by the attendance it helped generate)

IMG_1470
(You want to know one of the greatest things about America? Street food will pop up as if by magic around any sufficiently large social gathering. This is one of Capitalism’s greatest triumphs.)

IMG_1471
(Most of the food carts also had signs like these, supporting the unions and the public workers)

IMG_1476
(This is just priceless, especially the expression)

IMG_1477
(Look out, *actual* socialists!)

Update #4
The first Youtube video is uploaded and processed, so I embedded it above with the matching photos. At this point I’m starting a new protest blog page since this first one is getting rather media heavy.

Quick Update

As a reminder, the ZRC will be a bit distracted today covering the Madison protests for you, our loyal readers. Updates will be sporadic but hopefully pretty interesting.

This is why I normally leave signmaking to the Art Director, by the way. I can’t handle spacing, argh!

Oh well, it’s the message that counts. Off we go!

‘Eat at Joe’s’ Shirt References ‘Night of the Living Dead’ – Endorsement, Parody, or What?

Posted By on February 17, 2011

Usually these t-shirt sites are helpful, or spiteful, enough to give us quite a bit of description/text for context, but for this shirt, depicting the logo of a Zombie diner in Evans City, PA (hint: the nearest town to the farmhouse in the ‘Night of the Living Dead’ films), we’re not given much to go on.

On the one hand, taken literally, the existence of a diner logo with a Zombie waitress would seem to imply that Zombies are capable of commerce, running a fine dining establishment, engaging in good old American capitalism, what have you. On the other, it’s got faux-aging on it to imply the Zombie Apocalypse theme – as if everything relating to Zombies must be falling apart, because, ha, they are, amiright?

Hmm. Well, it’s a puzzle all right. Judging by some of the other virulently Anti-Zombie shirts they sell at Zazzle though, I’m not optimistic. I mean, those *could* be ketchup stains on the front, but somehow I doubt that’s what you’re supposed to believe.

Hat tip to FearNet for this one.

‘How to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse’ Show Comes to US

Posted By on February 17, 2011

We’ve mentioned the spinoff book from this touring comedy troupe/Anti-Zombie hate brigade before here on the ZRC, but British Anti-Zombie fanatics behind ‘How To Survive A Zombie Apocalypse’ are coming to the United States:

The team behind the award winning, sell out, cult, comedy seminar ‘How To Survive A Zombie Apocalypse’ are about to take their undead expertise across the ocean to LA, where they’ve been invited to perform for a ten day run at The Theatre Asylum as part of their Hollywood Fringe programme.

t’s just fantastic news and we’re all very excited’ says Ben Muir who plays the zombology guru Dr Dale and wrote ‘The Zombie Dictionary, ‘When we put the piece together and performed it for the first time we knew that we had a good show but we never dreamed that the response would be this great – and it’s even more satisfying when you think that we’ve achieved this success off our own back without the help of any promoters or agents or PR companies. It’s just purely been the hard work of the cast and the support from the great audiences we have, most of whom we still keep in touch with through our sites on Facebook and Twitter. It just goes to show that when sci-fi and horror geeks put their mind to it we can achieve anything!’

Well, anything but TOLERANCE, it would appear, ‘Dr’ Dale.

This is easily the most offensive import from the United Kingdom since ‘Shaun of the Dead’. We’re actually pretty full up on Anti-Zombie academics and pundits here in the United States, fellows. Why don’t you go bother Australia or something?

‘Zombie Runaway’ Game Tells Other Side of the ‘Zombie Apocalypse’

Posted By on February 17, 2011

Recently here on the ZRC we’ve had a stirring discussion about the nature, and plausibility, of a ‘Zombie Apocalypse’. Yet, amongst virtually all of the media and games surrounding these apocalypse scenarios, very rarely is the plight of the Zombie, even the poor imitation of one Hollywood allows us to see, considered.

We’ve seen that Movie Zombies have it very rough indeed, at least on an individual basis. More realistic modern takes on the ‘Zombie Apocalypse’ scenario, like ‘Shaun of the Dead’, show just how ruthless and efficient a modern military apparatus can be in massacring the poor and relatively defenseless Differently Animated, while both “Night of the Living Dead” films posited that rednecks with guns would be a dire threat to the Zombie population. For some reason, never properly explained, the Romero model ‘zombie’, adopted by many others including Robert Kirkman, is at least eventually a terrible threat despite being relatively unintelligent and poorly coordinated, and up against the combined might of PBR drinking hayseeds and the Military-Industrial Complex.

(My personal theory is that the biggest Anti-Zombie creators like Romero and Kirkman are miserable misanthropists, who thusly desire, in their heart of hearts, some form of karmic comeuppance for humankind, and when deprived of this justice in the real world, deliver it in their fiction. But that’s a topic for another day.)

Given the more realistic modern assessment, and the obvious perils faced by these zombie-substitutes, what would it look like if you played a Zompocalypse game from their perspective?

It might be something like this:

Fans of zombie movies will know that surviving hordes of the walking dead isn’t exactly easy, but few are likely to have thought about how hard it would be for a zombie to survive a human onslaught.

Zombie Runaway, Com2uS’s latest game for the iPhone and iPad, allows you to explore that scenario. In this arcade game, you control the last remaining zombie in an attempt to escape from the humans.

Ignoring the Anti-Zombie editorializing there for a bit, wow. A ‘Zombie Apocalypse’ game from a zombie, or ‘zombie’ at least, perspective?

That’s *some* progress at least.

The game itself doesn’t look like my cup of tea, and of course we tend toward Android over iPhone here at the ZRC, but still, it’s a pioneering approach, and we hope to see more games from the Zombie perspective in the near future, so it’s at least a decent start.

It will apparently be out on the App store in a few days, so those of you with iPhones or iPads might consider picking it up.

The Zombie Rights Campaign Statement on Current Events in Wisconsin and Governor Walker’s Plan to Disenfranchise Public Workers

Posted By on February 17, 2011

I know we’ve been dealing with some heady stuff lately here at the ZRC, and it might seem that our focus is broadening beyond the core ‘Zombie Rights’ message that we espoused in the past. To some extent, that’s true. However, as with our efforts to build bridges into the Independent Film Community, or our agitation on behalf of fellow travelers in the Undead Rights Movement like Egyptian Mummies, we here at the ZRC think that the best strategy to advance the cause of Undead Equality is to build a broader movement, forming relationships and solidarity with those who might serve as useful allies for The Cause.

Likewise, The ZRC believes strongly in standing up for the rights of the little guy, the individual, the oppressed or downtrodden classes of the world. Zombies know the pain of being discriminated against by an uncaring and unfeeling society, and this hard-won empathy should allow those of us who act on their behalf to show common cause with others who are being treated badly by the world at large.

Thus we come to another point where our movement broadens and the ZRC makes common cause with what might be a non-traditional ally of our Movement.

Some background:

Last November Wisconsin elected an arch-conservative Republican named Scott Walker to the Governor’s mansion. To say that Walker’s tenure as Governor has been controversial would be an understatement; to characterize it as a disaster would hardly be out of bounds. Due to Walker’s intransigence Wisconsin lost almost 800 million dollars in Federal funds for a badly needed moderately high speed rail line extension between Madison, the state capital, and Milwaukee, one of its largest cities. Madison currently has no passenger rail of any sort, no rail connections to Amtrak or other cities. Further, thanks to Walker’s train-bashing, Wisconsin lost out on thousands of jobs that would have been created during this difficult economy to construct the route and then staff and maintain the trains themselves.

The loss of this line directly impacts the Zombie Rights Movement here in the Upper Midwest. The single greatest barrier to The ZRC going out and working regionally on behalf of Zombies is not paperwork, nor taxes, nor even Tom Savini, try though he does to thwart The Cause, but transportation. When we attend events in Chicago we have to drive 2-3 hours each way and pay often exhorbitant rates for parking. When we go to Indiana it’s more like 7-8 hours. The length of these drives and the fuel consumed, even in our hybrid car, forces us to stay in hotels more often as well, dramatically increasing our overhead. If Madison had been connected to Amtrak here in Wisconsin, trips to Milwaukee and Chicago would have become dramatically less costly and more convenient; eventually, when the line was to be extended westward, we could have likewise ridden it to Minneapolis. Even trips to Indiana would have been greatly aided, given that there is a large Amtrak presence in Indianapolis. Thus the loss of the train has a direct and negative impact on our work for Zombie Rights.

Compounding Walker’s economic incompetence has been his obvious scorn for democratic principles and, yes, the Differently Animated. We previously discussed his hateful and transparent plan to disenfranchise Zombie Voters in Wisconsin with an onerous and burdensome series of regulations designed to suppress both the Democratic and Zombie votes, right here on the ZRC blog.

Now Walker has a new target in his sights: public sector unions. Teachers, prison guards, state, county and local workers, all would lose their hard-won rights to meaningfully collectively bargain under Walker’s proposal:

MADISON, Wis. – Thousands of teachers, students and prison guards descended on the Wisconsin Capitol on Wednesday to fight a move to strip government workers of union rights in the first state to grant them more than a half-century ago.

The Statehouse filled with as many as 10,000 demonstrators who chanted, sang the national anthem and beat drums for hours. The noise in the rotunda rose to the level of a chainsaw, and many Madison teachers joined the protest by calling in sick in such numbers that the district — the state’s second-largest — had to cancel classes.

The new Republican governor, Scott Walker, is seeking passage of the nation’s most aggressive anti-union proposal, which was moving swiftly through the GOP-led Legislature.

If adopted, it would mark a dramatic shift for Wisconsin, which passed a comprehensive collective bargaining law in 1959 and was the birthplace of the national union representing all non-federal public employees.

Why is he proposing this? Ostensibly to save money; 300 million dollars over two years. This is however a smokescreen. If Walker was so concerned about the state budget he would not have just slashed business taxes by over a hundred million dollars. Added bonus: one of Walker’s beloved tax cuts explicitly can only go to fairly large businesses, not small ones, like, say, an e-tailer selling Zombie Friendly merchandise. Nope; Scott Walker doesn’t care about those jobs.

Walker is also threatening a health program for low-income women that saves the state over 100 million dollars a year, because it involves birth control, which makes him feel icky. So much for fiscal responsibility!

Walker’s actual target in attacking the public workers and their unions is, in fact, the act of collective bargaining itself, of forming a group of like-minded individuals trying to improve their lives, and this is where he comes up against the Zombie Rights Movement. Zombies are huge believers in collective action; this is one of the very few things the movies get right. Zombies work together, and want to work with you, to better their lot and make a better future. Zombies *need* solidarity just to get by in a world that hates and fears them. Yet here, in the first state in the nation to allow unionization of public employees, we have a political radical seeking to take away the rights of thousands of Wisconsin citizens, some of whom may well be Zombies, so that he can continue to hand huge sacks of taxpayer cash to big businesses and mete out punishment to groups that failed to support his candidacy.

Outrageous, isn’t it? But it gets even worse. Walker has pledged that, if there is resistance to his reactionary power grab, he will employ the National Guard to break strikes, work stoppages or service disruptions:

MADISON, Wis. —
Gov. Scott Walker says the Wisconsin National Guard is prepared to respond wherever is necessary in the wake of his announcement that he wants to take away nearly all collective bargaining rights from state employees.

Walker said Friday that he hasn’t called the Guard into action, but he has briefed them and other state agencies in preparation of any problems that could result in a disruption of state services, like staffing at prisons.

An Anti-Zombie bigot like Walker calling out the National Guard? Is George Romero moonlighting on the Governor’s staff? In all seriousness, is it EVER good news for Zombies when a Zombie hating authority figure calls out the National Guard?

This is a perilous situation, for Wisconsin, sure, for civil liberties undoubtedly, for economic justice without a doubt – but most of all for Zombies!

That’s why tomorrow your ZRC President will be taking the day off his usual blogging, reviewing and activism to report from downtown at the Capitol, with pictures, video and analysis as the massive protests against Walker continue. Where else can you go to get first-hand accounts from a Zombie Friendly perspective of one of the most important stories in the United States today?

Probably nowhere else; stupid Mainstream Media. So it’s up to us at The Zombie Rights Campaign, and we’re happy to fill that role and live up to your expectations.

BuyZombie Features Our ‘Ban Headshots’ Shirt

Posted By on February 16, 2011

We were happy to see our Zombie Friendly original shirt design get featured on BuyZombie today, though we’re still working on changing their views vis a vis ‘Zombie killing’:

Our friends over at The Zombie Rights Campaign have a great zombie shirt out. While we may not always see eye to eye (they are pro-zombie rights we just report everything, even the oh so fun enjoyment of zombies getting shot in the head) we are friends so figured we’d have to throw some love their zombie loving way. (Not the love zombie killing way that you and me enjoy.)

This is our original shirt, and we still only have what’s left of the old stock on that one, having prioritized the Lurch for the Cure shirt because of the fundraising for Lynn Sage. We still have XLs and 2XL as I recall. We were, as the store notes, going to reorder late last year, but then some other stuff came up and we’re debating some all new t-shirt designs to replace/augment Tim there. If there was some serious demand for it we could bash out a quick Brunetto refill order at any time though.

We’re going to be doing new merch for the upcoming convention season and the blog will be the first place to find out about that, so stay tuned.

I need to go through the main site and update a lot of text actually; I’ve been doing bloggery stuff so long I forgot that the main site is a bit dated now.
