On Yesterday’s ‘Zombie’ Protest of Governor Walker

Posted By on June 9, 2011

The ZRC’s twitter feed exploded yesterday with news of a controversial protest of enormously unpopular and markedly Anti-Zombie Governor Scott Walker yesterday. There were a lot of quite frankly hysterical accusations that the protesters, dressed up as Zombies, had ‘shouted down’ the governor at an event for the Special Olympics.

Of course, nothing could be further from the truth, and in the digital age any decent protest is up on Youtube by the end of the business day:

The State-Journal confirms that this SILENT protest was in fact not at all disruptive of the Special Olympics event and part of a larger day of campaigning:

Earlier in the day, the group was part of a “Die-In and Zombie March” by about 50 people protesting cuts to student aid and a new voter ID law that critics say will make it harder for students to vote, said Erika Wolf, field organizer and lobbyist for the United Council of UW Students, an advocacy group that represents about 150,000 students throughout Wisconsin.

Participants wore zombie makeup and red-streaked T-shirts stating “Students are as good as dead” and lay on the steps of the Capitol while a “eulogy” was read and other protestors, dressed in black, posed as “mourners,” Wolf said. The group then marched through the Capitol and later stood near a crowd outside where Gov. Scott Walker was addressing a group from Special Olympics Wisconsin.

Kelly Kloepping, vice-president of communications for Special Olympics Wisconsin, said the protesters were respectful and caused no disruption.

There was even a somewhat touchingly Zombie Friendly sentiment to the protest:

With the zombie theme, the group was trying to do “something funny and interesting and eye-catching, and show that even if they’re going to have their rights stripped from them, they’re going to rise up,” Wolf said.

Precisely so; if beaten down by injustice and/or Death, you should rise up, as a Zombie if possible, and have fun. Global Reanimation Block Party!!

As to the negative media coverage and attempt by many conservatives on Twitter especially to demonize this protest:

Ok, listen. The ZRC is non-partisan, in that both Republicans and Democrats traditionally have oppressed the Differently Animated. Recently, especially at the local level, some Democrats (like our own mayor here in Madison, Paul Soglin) have come out strongly in favor of Zombie Rights, and we support them for that. Still, the national parties have both been strikingly silent about Zombies. I don’t want to give anyone the impression that this particular organization in the Z-Rights movement has thrown in formally with a national party.

At the same time, however, the Walker administration in Wisconsin has been particularly Anti-Zombie, with voter suppression policies tailor-made to suppress the student vote (and completely eliminate the homeless vote) hitting the Zombie voter hard either intentionally or as collateral damage. His attacks on the basic principle of collective bargaining, a core value in the Zombie Community as seen in their nearly-total membership in representative unions popularly called ‘hordes’, is also alarming.

Wisconsin GOP Gives Zombies a Bad Name

It’s natural that Zombies would want to protest the Governor, and at least understandable that Living people might avail themselves of the trappings of Zombie culture to engage in similar protest.

Zombie Protest

The ZRC cautions Living individuals, however, to be sensitive to the Zombie Community when walking for a day in their Undead shoes. First, your actions can and may be misinterpreted, even lied about, and these lies used to undermine Zombie Rights, which is an equally worthy goal by any measure. Second: if you don’t put a bit more effort into your makeup, you look kind of silly.

Seriously; torn white t-shirts and a little karo syrup with food coloring doesn’t make you look ‘Zombie’, it makes you look like a college kid who just ate a watermelon on laundry day. If Zombiism posed no greater difficulty than a bit of red on you and a torn shirt, the ZRC would hardly be necessary. Not all Zombies are afflicted with obvious gore, of course, but this is political theatre we’re talking about. Don’t demagogue, but don’t trivialize either, and get some spirit gum and latex going for Pete’s sake.

Alternately you could just invite some actual Zombies, you know! They turn out if you ask nicely, and so does the ZRC:

We even have relevant literature about Zombies and their relationship to Governor Walker’s radical politics that you can peruse.

In summation: The ZRC supports yesterday’s peaceful, non-violent and respectful protests at the Capitol featuring students dressed up as ‘Zombies’. We simply ask for continued respectful treatment of the Zombie Community and an awareness amongst protesters of the potential fallout for actual Zombies from protests using the symbols of Zombie Culture.

A little mutual understanding goes a long way. Zombie-Living Solidarity!

ZRC Reviews: ‘The Confessional’

Posted By on June 8, 2011

Youtube is rapidly becoming a revolutionary platform for distributing independent movies; we recently reviewed (and loved) Rigamortis: A Zombie Love Story here on the ZRC blog, and it’s up for free viewing on Youtube for a limited time, for example. That is a finely acted and directed, Zombie Friendly musical experience.

Then, however, there are the Anti-Zombie films proliferating on Youtube like a plague of locusts in a grain belt. Case in point, the bizarre CG/live action hybrid experience, ‘The Confessional’.

‘The Confessional’ reminds me of… well, a very strange, non-Zombie film from The Dark Carnival last year called ‘Liquid Memories’, which was a very trippy CGified film about altering one’s own memories. Indie film that uses CG in this manner to suggest madness and the dissolution of society doesn’t come along every day, so I guess they are vaguely similar visually, if not in theme.

Of course, only one involves Anti-Zombie prejudice, and that’s ‘The Confessional’, our topic for today.

Circuitous aren’t I? I blame all the lightning, it’s fried my brain today. At any rate, ‘The Confessional’ describes itself thusly on its Youtube page:

After a long hard fought battle against the undead, one of the last men on Earth seeks solace in a nearby church by confessing his sins to a priest, who has also survived the zombie invasion.

Just starting off we clearly have issues with this movie. I mean, ‘zombie invasion’? That’s more than putting a thumb on the scale, it’s like an entire fist. How about ‘Global Reanimation Block Party’ instead, hmm?

Needless to say, this man is supposed to be our short film’s protagonist, and the audience is, I guess, supposed to be rooting for him to find the solace he seeks in the lonely church, perhaps even be granted absolution. Things don’t always go the way you’d plan though… I won’t spoil the ending, except to say: you’re going to see it coming. I mean, seriously. This film is about four minutes long and if you’re like me you’ll spend almost half yelling at the screen for it to go ahead and get the ‘twist’ over with, thanks much.

It’s a very Anti-Zombie twist too. The ZRC hence rates ‘The Confessional’ a solid ‘Living Supremacist’ for being yet another entry in the ‘Zombies are going to destroy everything I love, boo hoo’ line of films pandering to fearful Living narcissists.

Awful fearmongering.

You can see the whole film below, not that I recommend it:

Hat tip to KillingBoxx for pointing this one out to the ZRC.

This Week’s Events in Chicago

A quick reminder to Zombie Rights Enthusiasts everywhere that the ZRC will be making two public appearances at great events this week/weekend.

First, at 7 pm tomorrow in Schaumburg, the ZRC will be attending the 3 Slices of Life DVD release event at F.Y.E.:

Oppressing Zombies at a mall? How original!

Then this weekend from 3-6 pm on Saturday in Millennium Park we’ll be at the 4th Annual Chicago Zombie March. Hopefully it will be a little less damp than last year!

So please, if you’re in the greater Chicago area, come out this weekend for some fun and help advance The Cause of Zombie Rights and full Undead Equality.

What Fresh Evil is Tom Savini Up to?

Posted By on June 7, 2011

It’s always good to keep an eye on Tom Savini and George Romero; they pop up unexpectedly from time to time and when they do it’s rarely good for the Differently Animated, ‘Creepshow’ aside:

Tom Savini is a freaking legend, the guy has provided us with some of the greatest gore f/x for years, using simple things such as latex, syrup and possibly other house hold items instead of the now more commonly used technique of CGI.

Tom Savini has also done f/x work for another Australian flick Redd inc. which we have mentioned before, you can check it out HERE. Mary Doe is written and directed by Nick Nicolaou, check out the synopsis;

“A twelve-day trek across the desert and the insignificant form that is Mary Doe has exhausted all life within her. Rescued from death’s door, she finds herself abandoned with five men, in a decommissioned government facility used for testing biological weapons.

Lost with no memory of who she is and no placement in this world, she finds no reason to want to win her freedom — to journey BACK FROM THE DEAD…

Isolation breeds paranoia — no one can hide from their demons forever. As Mary unravels her past, the world she has fallen into crumbles down around her. The MUTANTS have found their way into the bunker. She has to gather her strength and find a reason to want to live — to want to get out of this HOLE IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE.

Mary Doe is a Horror/Thriller, in the vein of films such as: Alien, The Thing, Dawn of the Dead and The Terminator.
Murder, Deception, Justice… A classic Noir Femme Fatale story set in the world of the BANISHED and the UNDEAD.”

Another movie bashing, apparently, Undead Mutants, with Tom Savini supplying the gore and no doubt plenty of extremely disturbing and violent effects to satisfy his legions of bloodthirsty fans. Nasty.

This also goes to show that nowhere is safe from the curse of Savini. One day it could be Pennsylvania, the next, Australia; he strikes seemingly at random.

The ZRC will naturally alert you to any future Savini sightings to keep you as safe as possible.

Another Zombie Friendly Indie Film in ‘Ace the Zombie’? Well, Perhaps…

Posted By on June 7, 2011

Ignoring the thick layer of scorn heaped on the Differently Animated by the usual suspects at Dread Central, this sounds like it could be a winner:

Let’s face it … just because you’re a rotting, shambling, undead thing with a hunger for human flesh doesn’t mean that you don’t need anyone to look out for you. Given their poor physical state, zombies probably need more help than anyone. Good thing for them that Ace is here.

Allen Christopher Edwards, Ace to his friends, is a great guy but a total pushover. Everyone takes advantage of him from his boss and coworkers to his girlfriend, Brenda. He gains newfound confidence when he is bitten and becomes a zombie. But Keeper Ellis, head of the Zombie Control Force, has a secret plan to destroy all zombies. Ace must now fight for the lives of all Undead Americans as he matches wits with the evil Keeper Ellis.

Sounds great, right? A newly Differently Animated individual finds his confidence and the spring in his step after a major life-to-Unlife change and has to combat prejudice. Nice!

The trailer however seems to muddle that message more than a bit with some unfortunate Anti-Zombie stereotyping:

We’re not sure what to take away from this; the Zombie Friendly synopsis, the unfortunate emphasis in the teaser, or something in between?

The ZRC will keep an eye out for this one. We’d love another Zombie Friendly indie film; we really would.

But vigilance is the watchword here.

Boston Zombie March Suffers From Negative Stereotypes of the Undead, Bad Press

Posted By on June 7, 2011

We wanted to highlight yet *another* apparently successful Zombie Public Event here on the ZRC blog, and also to point out how even the most peaceable and outgoing Zombie activities can suffer slander from the Mainstream Media, as well as unfortunate bias from organizers:

On Saturday, hundreds gathered in downtown Boston for the seventh annual Boston Zombie March. Individuals dressed as the undead and staggered down the streets, starting at South Station and eventually ending at T.T. the Bear for an after-party. The Zombie March only has two rules: “don’t scare kids and don’t actually gnaw your neighbors.” (here.)

Those seem like good rules to live, or Unlive, by in general, but why would you feel they have to be pointed out to Zombies?

Still, they were, repeatedly:

We made it through Judgment Day unscathed but, this Saturday, the dead will indeed walk the Earth. It’s time for Boston Zombie March VII, the only time to dress up like a brain-gobbling fiend of hell and lurch around the city without getting some sort of citation. The only rules for the citywide stagger (which kicks off at South Station) are: don’t scare kids and don’t actually gnaw your neighbors. Even if you skip the march, you should still check out the after-party at T.T. the Bear’s . . . it’ll be a scream.

This condescension is just unacceptable, especially in a public event featuring the Differently Animated community’s heartfelt participation. The notion that you need to give Zombies a special talking-to in order to avoid violence or terrified children is absurd; we certainly didn’t have any of that at the Madison rally, and the many events held in Chicago for the Undead aren’t marred by such things.

In spite of this sort of pandering to the Romero-Kirkman crowd, the outing seems to have gone off well enough, and there are some nice pictures available too:

(A Zombie takes a nice break from the party atmosphere)

(said party atmosphere)

Now, do these party-going Zombies look like the sort of people who need repeated lecturing about how to behave? I think not.

Hopefully the organizers and press in Boston will take note of the continuing good behavior of the Differently Animated and respond accordingly; if not, they can certainly expect a stern letter from the ZRC next year.

Movie Attempts to Harness Zombie Crawl for Purposes of Making Apparently Anti-Zombie Film

Posted By on June 6, 2011

We love Zombie Walks, marches, public events of almost all sorts here at the ZRC. In fact, next Saturday we’re attending the big 4th Annual Zombie March in Chicago and we’d love to see you there.

However, news of this ‘Zombie Crawl’ in Brooklyn being used to collect footage for a movie about Zombies attacking hipsters saddened us greatly:

This afternoon we crawl! We’ll have a Pabst Blue Ribbon open bar from 5-6pm before the crawl and the all-girls Misfits cover band GHOULS NIGHT OUT will be performing at the afterparty for the 4th Annual Springtime Zombie Crawl! We’ll also have a zombie photo booth and a Hot Zombie contest as well!!

On Sunday, May 29th we’ll begin 4pm at Knitting Factory Brooklyn (361 Metropolitan Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11211) with our usual FREE zombie meetup! For 2 hours, zombies of all ages are invited to hang out while our zombie technicians will be providing makeup for civilians who wish to become undead! Zombies over 21+ can drink with some great drink specials including $1 off all beers and $2 off all liquor! Shot and Bloody Mary specials as well as more surprises!

At 6pm, we will take our annual trek down Bedford Avenue! Only this time, we’ll be shooting a scene for Punk Rock Holocaust 3 while we crawl, a zombie attack on the hipsters of Brooklyn! We’re looking for some victims to be eaten by the zombie masses and everyone is invited to help shoot the scene as well. If you have a camera bring it, or just use your smart phone! We’ll be awarding prizes for the best footage! You can upload your videos to YouTube with the tag “NYZPRH2011″ and you’re entered! It’s that easy! Email info@nyczombiecrawl.com with the subject PRH3 Shoot to get more info and sign up to be involved!

I’ll say this much for Anti-Zombie filmmakers: they never run out of new ways to market fear of a Zombie ‘attack’ to yet another cultural subgroup. Cops, the military, sure, retail drones like Shaun, yeah, medical personnel, but now, hipsters? Hipsters are supposed to be afraid of Zombies?

Keep in mind that with their PBR open bar and Brooklyn shooting location many of the Zombies who show up were likely to be hipsters themselves!

The ZRC wants to state for the record that Zombies are no more likely to attack Hipsters than anyone else who’s tired of hearing about how great bands were before they sold out or the wonderful variety of clothing you can get if you know the best vintage stores.

Ahem.

There are pictures from the event up at The Gothamist as well, and they couldn’t resist larding it with their own editorializing against the Undead:

The weather yesterday was perfect… for eating brains! As the Memorial Day Eve sun drifted down over Williamsburg the undead took to the streets to groan unintelligibly, laugh maniacally, enjoy zombie-themed drink specials, play reindeer zombie games in McCarren Park, shoot a scene for Punk Rock Holocaust 3 and scare the bejesus out of passersby. All-in-all a nice way to spend a Sunday evening!

Here are some pics of yesterday’s 4th Annual Zombie Crawl sent in by our ghoulish readers. But as you can see from the photos, there were nearly as many shutterbugs out yesterday as brain-eaters.

As we all know by now, hipsters hate the mainstream. You know what’s really mainstream? Thinking that all Zombies are unintelligent monsters obsessed with eating brains. THAT is mainstream, as well as factually incorrect of course. We know a lot of Zombie Friendly media, events and organizations that would beg to differ with that erroneous assertion, but you’ve probably never heard of them, Gothamist.

Oh well. I guess we’re all just too far ahead of our time for them to understand.

ThinkGeek Has to Go and Ruin a Potentially Zombie Friendly Product

Posted By on June 6, 2011

Noted internet hate merchant ThinkGeek isn’t satisfied with repeatedly earning the ZRC’s ire selling flagrantly Anti-Zombie products, oh no; sometimes they have to take a product that could be gently subversive of the prevailing negative stereotypes of the Differently Animated and ruin it with their ad copy.

Example:

Not bad until they defamed the Differently Animated

It’s What Zombies Crave – Little ice-cubes shaped like braaaaaaaainsss!

Basically, there are two ways we can approach how awesome these brain-shaped ice-cubes are:

1 – we can take the obvious zombie angle. Naturally, Zombies are (were) people, too, and when they’re done with a long day at the office, tearing the gizzards out of Phil in Accounting, there’s nothing they prefer more than to kick back with a high-ball of their favorite adult beverage, and ruminate on the day’s activity…

See, here we had a product that, if the marketing had been Zombie positive, the ZRC would have been happy to endorse as a gentle satire of the awful and hateful prejudice that grips America and indeed much of the world regarding Zombies.

Instead, we have to condemn ThinkGeek. Again.

You can see the product and imagine what might have been here.

A Scottish ‘Shaun of the Dead’ Spreads Fear of the Differently Animated and Herbal Tea?

Posted By on June 5, 2011

Europe has gone absolutely nuts with the Zombie bashing! Here’s yet ANOTHER European film that bashes the Differently Animated coming out, this time from Scotland:

Attack of the Herbals” is a “Evil Dead”/”Shaun of the Dead” style horror comedy, independently produced and shot in the North East of Scotland.

Jackson McGregor returns to the tiny fishing village of “Lobster Cove” only to find that a local land baron Bennett Campbell is taking over with a new development. The only thing that stands in Bennett’s way is Jackson’s grandparent’s post office.

Jackson’s life is soon turned upside down when he and a childhood friend discover a mysterious, unmarked crate, washed ashore with a strange substance that happens to make rather nice tea.

Armed with a plan to save the post office, the two friends embark on a frantic business venture, selling the new strange tea to the local pensioners and fishermen. Seemingly giving them a new lease of life.

The money rolls in and the tea starts to run out. The two friends get so carried away with their new found success that they fail to notice the strange things that have started occurring in Lobster Cove.

With the help of a local German priest they discover that the contents of the crate are actually part of a World War Two Nazi experiment. Things get drastically worse when land baron also gets addicted to the tea with deadly consequences!

There are trailers of course, and they showcase the oddly bright and cheerful palette of this dark ‘horror comedy’:

I’m not sure if the tea-drinking Scots in this movie are technically Zombies, but they do seem to fall under the broader umbrella of the Differently Animated, and we certainly see their side of things. Here they were, minding their own business when a couple of idiots sold them an untested, unlicensed DRUG as ‘tea’. So they start acting a little ‘strange’; so what? They’re obviously the victims here.

Yet clearly we as the audience are supposed to cheer on violence and slapstick directed against them by the very reckless cons who sold them a defective product; you can’t tell me that if they weren’t a little Different, whether in a Zombie or ‘Crazies’ fashion, that this would be deemed acceptable behavior.

Another outrageous film from Europe? This trend is simply unacceptable.

A Modern Day ‘Plan 9′? Why? Why God, Why?

Posted By on June 5, 2011

Sometimes I sincerely wonder if the universe is alive, malignant, and focused on thwarting both good taste and the advance of Zombie Friendly media. When someone essentially reboots the plot of ‘Plan 9 from Outer Space’ as a modern day indie film, you have to wonder if the world is out to get us:

A small town in Texas battles an army of the undead controlled by aliens from outer space.

When… when does the hurting stop?

Well, even a new Plan 9 won’t stop the ZRC! We’ll just pick ourselves up and keep working for the Differently Animated, so there.
